2025 ECLA Spring Retreat: Sun, Strategy & Connection

Saguaro Hotel, Palm Springs | May 15–17, 2025

Palm Springs came alive with energy as ECLA members gathered at the colorful Saguaro Hotel for a weekend of connection, collaboration, and inspiration. From thoughtful sessions to relaxed dinners, this retreat was all about recharging and reimagining the future of California’s legal associations.

    Kickoff and Fun Vibes

Thursday evening set the tone with the optional Drag & Fly activity, followed by a lively welcome reception. Attendees had plenty of time to catch up and soak in the Palm Springs vibe before heading off to dinner on their own.

    Packed with Insight

Friday delivered a full day of programming covering everything from tax implications to disaster preparedness, and creative ways to boost membership benefits.

Friday kicked off with a fun icebreaker: attendees introduced themselves and shared a childhood TV show or movie they loved—and how it’s influenced them today. The responses were as diverse as the group itself, with some noting that TV wasn’t a big part of their early years. For many, though, those early stories sparked curiosity, shaped values, or even nudged them toward careers in law and public service. It was a great reminder that we all grow up with different experiences, and those moments—big or small—play a role in who we become and how we lead.

A special presentation by Brian Yacker, Tax Principal at Baker Tilly, provided a clear and informative look at the tax implications for 501(c)(6) organizations—sparking great conversation and questions from attendees.

Friday night wrapped up with a group dinner at a local Palm Springs restaurant, perfect for casual conversations and deeper connections.

    Saturday’s Sessions and Business Meeting

Saturday’s agenda tackled committee engagement, tech tools, and membership strategies. The business meeting followed but wrapped early, thanks to some spirited poolside tunes nearby.

Thank You to Our Sponsors and Presenters

We were thrilled to have Adrienne J. Choy-Enoksen from California Bank of Commerce present and capture great moments from the weekend. Thanks also to Hellen Hong and DeAndra Jones of Cal Bar Connect for their insightful presentations.

A big shoutout to all our sponsors—CalBar Connect, California Bank of Commerce, vLex Fastcase, and MemberCentral—whose support made this event possible. And we hope everyone enjoyed the swag they provided!

The following proposed amendments are open for public comment:

    • Proposed Amendment re: annual civility pledge.  This amendment would require a one-time declaration and complete an annual pledge for attorneys to conduct themselves with civility.
    • Rules of Professional conduct addressing incivility.  These changes would clarify that a lawyer may be disciplined for incivility and provide a new basis in the rules for discipline.
    • MCLE Changes:  The changes would increase the MCLE competency requirement, add requirements on technology in law practice and civility, and allow credit for certain activities. The proposed changes would not increase the total hours required under MCLE rules.
